World Health Organization Faces Major Workforce Reduction After United States Funding Withdrawal

The international public health organization disclosed intentions to cut its staff by nearly a fourth – amounting to more than 2,000 jobs – before mid-2026.

Funding Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring

The move comes following the US, formerly the agency's biggest donor, withdrew financial support previously this period.

The US government was responsible for approximately 18% of the agency's total funding, causing a significant financial shortfall.

Projected Staff Reductions

According to organizational projections, the workforce will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.

This reduction of 2,371 posts includes staff reductions, retirements, and natural attrition.

"This year was one of the toughest in our history, while we undertook a challenging but essential process of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's leader.

Financial Shortfall Remains

The Switzerland-headquartered body currently confronts a budget gap of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, representing almost a fourth of its total budget.

The amount marks an reduction from a previous projected shortfall of $1.7bn reported in spring.

Excluded Funding

These budget projections do not include an additional $1.1bn in expected funding from ongoing negotiations with multiple contributors.

A spokesperson for the organization stated that the present unfunded portion of the budget is actually smaller than in earlier periods, attributing this to several factors:

  • A smaller total budget
  • Initiation of a fresh donor outreach campaign
  • Higher in member states' mandatory contributions

This realignment process is now approaching its completion, paving the way for the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
